ELA Classroom Volunteer

Volunteers will work with adult immigrants and refugees who are learning English to live and work successfully in their new community. They will assist the classroom instructors by working with small groups or individuals one-on-one. Volunteers may work with various levels but there is a strong need for those who are able to work with early literacy focusing on the beginning elements of reading and writing.

Classes are held either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening depending on the site. Locations vary across the metro-Denver area.


Strong desire to work with immigrants and refugees to improve their English language skills

Experience working with diverse populations

Sensitive to cultural differences

Comfortable helping people with very limited English skills

Prior experience tutoring or teaching English strongly preferred

Ability to be flexible

English fluency – speaking, listening, reading and writing

Must pass background check (paid by Focus Points)


Work with students in either small groups or one-on-one under the direction of the instructor

Be available 1 to 2 mornings/afternoons/evenings a week

Deliver engaging and relevant lesson-related activities

Three month minimum time commitment
